Project 1
Learning Outcome
Project 1 is a group project with an individual component. In groups of eight (8) students, the task is to romanticize a typical Malaysian tropical beach and translate it into an intriguing narrative journey that will then be transformed it into two (2) individual standalone Poetic Journey Structure. Students are required to come up with one narrative which will then transform into two structures. One as a concentric journey structure and one as a linear journey structure (from the same narrative or storyline – with minor adjustments to suit). Students will then create a poetic video of the journey using the models.

Site Analysis
Site Analysis, Site Response and Design Concept
is a set of tasks for students to conduct a site analysis of the given
spesific site and the “study area”. The aim is to extract the tangible
and intangible elements of the site to develop guidelines on how to
design the Tanjung Tuan Recreational Forest Discovery Center
with the site conditions.
Project 2a is a “tutorial team” group project. In groups of 15 or 16,
the team will need to distribute the given tasks wisely to carry out
the site analysis. There are five (5) division of tasks to be completed
within the duration of less than two (2) weeks. All item to be
presented as a slide presentation except, the site plan, site
sections, site model and the visceral board to be manually
produce).

Project 2B
The task is to design a Discovery Center (Visitor Center) specifically for the Tanjung Tuan Recreational Forest.
The overall project should emphasize and celebrate the diversity of culture, heritage and history, and the well-
being of the place (example the fresh air and natural environment) the community, activities, and economy. The building
structure will serve the following purposes,
▪ To provide a physical point of reference that keeps the culture/ history/ memory/ essence of the place alive
▪ To house and display relevant informative material for visitors to understand and appreciate
▪ To provide areas/spaces to conduct any kind of engaging program related to the Tanjung Tuan Recreational Forest
and the exhibition.
The program of the Discovery Center should be specifically about the place, people, culture, and history of the
site. Students are required to extract and decide on the significant value/essence and the distinctive or interesting
characteristic of the place that would be best to represent and express the spirit of the place (genius loci). This will
then be translated into a narrative that would aid the design and journey of the Discovery Center.
The design should be a standalone building (one building only) and it must be two (2) storey above ground
level (a sunken area is allowed but not a full basement) and the total floor area of the design scheme must be between
350sqm to 450sqm (referring to the covered internal spaces and minimum 30% should be on the top floor). Students
may decide on the floor to ceiling “height” as long as it is two (2) storey. The design should consider universal design
as it should be accessible to all. It is important for students to identify, explore and emphasize the implementation of two
(2) “modifying elements of architecture” as part of the design.
